Something to think about before engaging a client

Nick Vahalik of the Commerce Guys gave a good talk this morning about what to look for when deciding if you want to work with a client.

Here is a summary of what he said

Good Client Traits include

  1. They focuses on users
    1. sees value in spending time on customer experience
  2. They are ready to devote time to content strategy
  3. Has a long term strategy
    1. Uses phase approach to development
    2. Users analytics to determine where you can see users drop off
  4. Treats developer as “co-pilot”
  5. Doesn’t use RFQ or RFP except for discussion point
  6. Trusts developer or at least takes time to get to know you.
  7. Knows Drupal Commerce ( or other product you’re developing)

Traits of Bad clients include:

  1. Focuses on products
    1. sees site as just a catalog
  2. Just wants a list of stuff
  3. Short term strategy of  only building a website
  4. Treats developer as a “code geek”
  5. Gives RFP or RFQ
  6. Doesn’t care about the developers
  7. Hates the product you are developing in

In short

Lead you client

  • be the architect of their success not just their site

Think big picture

            Sometime is good to launch a site with limited features instead of developing complicated features that the client is not even sure the users will use.
