Matt Robison of the Louisville Web Group had a great presentation at the Drupal eCommerce summit about "Take advantage of low hanging fruit" when communicating with your users on a commerce site. (It's great tips for any site really)
His tips includied
Make the most of Transactional emails
- Send them a coupon code email in next day
- Use shipping confirmation to advertise free shipping on other items
- Use account confirmation email to send specials based on what is in cart
- (Ifusing Drupal Commerce, Check out the commerce message module to create specialized messages based on the order entities (requires messages and message notify)
Use the empty cart view page
- Use the no results functionality of views to encourage users to contiue shopping, or
- Present a view of items on sale.
- Any call to action is better than none.
Use the logout page
- Remind users of sales. You don’t want users to log out!
Order Confirmation page
- Use the Order Confirmation to page to display cross sales, offer them the ability to get on the email list
- Share the purchase the friends, get them to download the app. Offer a coupon code for the next order.
Password Recovery Page.
- Turn the negative experience into a positive.
- Remind them of what is good on the other side
- Offer them a coupon code
- Show them a view of featured items
- DON”T BLAME THEM by posting a harsh message
The User account page
- Give them your contact and support information
- Give them something good to do
404 page
- Add a tease to the content
Internal Site Search
- Track your site search
- Maybe they are searching for something you don’t carry, check for misspelling and seeing popular items
Set up a basic loyalty program.
- Send emails on important dates
- Use user points module to gather other data
