Nick Vahalik of the Commerce Guys gave a good talk this morning about what to look for when deciding if you want to work with a client.
Here is a summary of what he said
Good Client Traits include
- They focuses on users
- sees value in spending time on customer experience
- They are ready to devote time to content strategy
- Has a long term strategy
- Uses phase approach to development
- Users analytics to determine where you can see users drop off
- Treats developer as “co-pilot”
- Doesn’t use RFQ or RFP except for discussion point
- Trusts developer or at least takes time to get to know you.
- Knows Drupal Commerce ( or other product you’re developing)
Traits of Bad clients include:
- Focuses on products
- sees site as just a catalog
- Just wants a list of stuff
- Short term strategy of only building a website
- Treats developer as a “code geek”
- Gives RFP or RFQ
- Doesn’t care about the developers
- Hates the product you are developing in
In short
Lead you client
- be the architect of their success not just their site
Think big picture
Sometime is good to launch a site with limited features instead of developing complicated features that the client is not even sure the users will use.
